The problem

Homebuyers often experience "fear of missing out" (FOMO) and find it challenging to stay organized during their search. Many rely on external tools like Excel to track listings, as they find existing features on FINN.no insufficiently intuitive or comprehensive. This highlighted the need for a tailored tool that combines ease of use with powerful organizational capabilities.

The solution

We developed a concept for a comparison tool integrated with FINN.no to help users organize, track, and evaluate properties efficiently. The tool also aimed to reduce user frustration and make property searches more engaging through collaborative and personalized features. By incorporating AI-generated summaries and shared lists, the solution was designed to save time and simplify decision-making.

Introduction

This project was part of my summer internship at FINN.no, focused on creating tools to enhance the home-buying experience for users. Our target audience was potential homebuyers, especially those who struggle with managing and comparing listings effectively while searching for their dream home. The goal was to develop a user-centered solution that fit seamlessly into FINN.no’s existing ecosystem.

Research and Insights, Design Process

We conducted user interviews, guerrilla testing, and workshops to understand pain points and user behaviors. Key findings revealed that users often lack trust in automated features like saved searches and rely on manual methods for tracking properties. These insights informed our design focus on transparency, customization, and ease of use, which were critical to building user trust and satisfaction.

Our design process followed a double-diamond approach:

  1. Discovery: Identifying user pain points and brainstorming potential directions.

  2. Define: Prioritizing features like shared lists, AI summaries, and comparison tools.

  3. Develop: Sketching, wireframing, and creating low-fidelity prototypes.

  4. Deliver: Iterating through user testing and refining the final concept.
This iterative approach ensured that each stage aligned with user needs and expectations.

Final Designs, short on Accessibility and Inclusivity

The final design incorporated playful, user-friendly visuals while maintaining a professional and functional aesthetic aligned with FINN.no's branding. The comparison tool allowed users to filter, sort, and add notes to listings, with AI-generated summaries for quick decision-making. Accessibility considerations ensured inclusivity for users with varying tech skills, reinforcing FINN.no’s commitment to reaching a broad audience.

Outcomes and Reflections

The solution addressed key user pain points, making it easier for homebuyers to stay organized and confident in their decisions. User testing indicated positive feedback on the tool's usability and collaborative features. This project reinforced the value of iterative design and user feedback in creating impactful digital solutions, as well as the importance of aligning user needs with business objectives.
